#AllLivesMatter is Offensive: Here's Why...
We're in the midst of an extraordinary climate of revolution. Communities are rising up to fight the systems that have oppressed Black people for centuries. Black Lives Matter is the battle cry that is being heard throughout the world.
In the midst of this quintessential fight for justice, there's been no lack of tone deaf responses.
Most of them come from people like me - who are non-Black and have no knowledge of what it means to live life in Black skin. If you are a non-Black person, this post is written in the hopes of shedding light on the role you play in this movement...
It is not about you.
Don't All Lives Matter it.
Don't bring up the struggles of your own community in the hopes of eliciting comparison.
Black people are being murdered.
This is not about you.
All Lives Matter is a slogan which originated with the sole purpose of presenting a direct opposition to Black Lives Matter - it's not about all lives mattering, it's only about preventing Black lives from mattering.
Its very ideological basis is maintaining a system that has led to the murders of countless Black men, women and children. When you gloss over Black oppression by mentioning your own; when you respond with an 'All Lives Matter' to injustices faced by the Black community - you are wilfully ignoring centuries of ongoing trauma and abuses faced by Black people. You are turning a blind eye to structural inequalities that quite literally destroy Black lives.
If you truly believe that all lives are valuable, you will stand up and fight against the oppression of Black lives that have been historically undervalued.
All Lives Mattering this situation is a hateful reduction of a struggle that you have no way of understanding.
We can never understand - but what we can and need to be doing is supporting this movement in mind, body and spirit.
